Obituary for Sally Porter Whittier (Porter)

Sally Porter Whittier, 86, of South Hamilton, MA passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2011. Sally was born in Hamilton, MA. on September 13, 1924 to parents Harold and Lydia Porter. After a childhood in Hamilton, she went on to college at Westbrook Junior College in Portland, Maine. She returned to work in the Hamilton-Wenham School District prior to her marriage to Robert (Bob) Pearson Whittier of Wenham, Ma. in 1945.
Their early years included residences in California, New England, Pennsylvania and Florida. Robert’s continuing education took them to Middlebury, Vermont and Cambridge, MA. They made their home in St. Louis, Missouri for over 20 years with their two children. Sally engaged in numerous civic and church activities. With her warm and open smile and spirit, Sally easily made new friends wherever she went. Sally enjoyed bird watching, tennis, golf, and all the sports and cultural events offered in the St. Louis area.
In the mid 80’s, Sally and Robert returned to Hamilton. A lifelong member of Christ Church, Sally became a member of the vestry. Sally also actively supported Robert’s involvement in civic affairs. Travel abroad with a of circle friends took them to Kenya, Ireland, and Eastern Europe.
Sally is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert P. Whittier, of S. Hamilton; and family members Jack Whittier and wife Voni of Greenwood Village, Co. and daughter Nina McCarthy and husband Robert of Geneva, NY. Her grandchildren include John, Taylor and Austin Whittier; and Daniel and wife Dana, Katelin and Caroline McCarthy. First cousins are Mr. and Mrs. Warren Preston of Rockport .
. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church of Hamilton, 149 Asbury Street, Hamilton, on Saturday, September 17th at 2:00 p.m.. A private family burial service will be held prior to the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Christ Church Music Program, 149 Asbury St., S. Hamilton, MA 01982 or a charity of choice.
