Condolences

Condolence From: Bob Woodbury
Condolence: Bob "Whit" was my father's (Robert N. Woodbury, "Wood")best friend beginning when they grew up across the street from each other on Monument Street in Wenham in the 1920s and 1930s and continuing until my Dad passed away in 2010. All my life Dad loved to tell the stories of the fun Whit and Wood had playing tennis, exploring the woods around Monument Street, playing pranks on each other, taking care of a neighbor's horse, "Bananas", for a period during the 1930s and dates with their girlfriends and later wives Sally and Dorothy. My Dad was thrilled when Bob and Sally returned to Hamilton following his retirement from Monsanto in St. Louis and they continued their fun with tennis, cross country skiing and other activities for many years.
Mr. Whittier was a complete and total gentleman, successful businessman, dedicated family man, committed public servant to the Town of Hamilton and wonderful friend. He was at my Dad's memorial service and was a tremendous comfort to my family and me. He will be much missed and greatly appreciated by the Woodbury family, along with many, many others. May be rest in peace (and share many more laughs with my Dad).

Condolence From: Debbie Levey
Condolence: Bob was one of my alumni penpals when I wrote the MIT Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering newsletter. For many years we corresponded about a wide variety of topics concerning his undergraduate experience and later career, especially the Monsanto House of the Future (HOF). When he wanted to find an appropriate place to donate his enormous collection of HOF photos, materials, plans, newspaper clippings, etc., I put him in touch with the MIT Museum. They were thrilled to receive such a complete collection of artifacts for future study. Over the years I printed a number of stories about his participation in the HOF that alerted new generations about engineering accomplishments before computers.

We also corresponded about our families, birds, and life in general. He was always gracious and wrote interesting letters and emails. I will miss him.

Condolence From: Meg (Stahlberg) Crumbine
Condolence: Dear family and friends,

I am sad to learn of Bob's passing. He and Sally were very dear friends of my parents - Peggy and Paul Stahlberg. My Dad also worked for Monsanto for years, and we lived in St. Louis for many years.

My parents also lived in Hamilton and regularly saw Bob and Sally. Bob and Sally attended my wedding in NYC in 1998. They drove to NY with my parents, stayed at the Waldorf-Astoria and after drove up the Hudson Valley stopping in at the Roosevelt Estate and had a spectacular dinner at The Culinary Institute. My parents - and I think Bob and Sally - had a marvelous time. I'm so grateful that they were able to attend my wedding and celebrate with us.

There were also trips to Bermuda, dinner parties, and other family weddings.

Bob was a remarkable, great man. When my father passed away in 1999, he was a great comfort to my mother and to all of us.

He was perhaps the best example of The Greatest Generation: a gentleman through and through, a devoted husband and father, a veteran of two wars, an active member of the community and a dear friend of my parents.

I offer my deepest condolences to Bob's family. He had a full and long life but his passing will leave a hole in many hearts.

With much love,

Meg Stahlberg Crumbine
