Betty M. Bone (Bone)
Beverly - Betty M. Bone, 93, A long time resident of Salem and Beverly, died on Sunday, January 15, 2017.
Born on September 30, 1923 in St. Joseph, Missouri, she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in 1944 from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, and a Master’s Degree in Personnel and Counseling in 1954 from Washington University in St. Louis.
For many years she was employed by the Monsanto Company in St. Louis, serving from 1958-1966 as Manager of Women’s Personnel. In 1966, Miss Bone was hired as Assistant Dean of Jackson College, then the women’s college associated with Tufts University.
A staunch advocate of women in business, Miss Bone was featured in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch when she left Monsanto for Jackson College. The paper quoted her: “Woman’s world is changing. We who are living through this change have to keep adapting, keep growing.” In 1967 she was promoted to be Dean of Women of Tufts University (serving as Acting Dean of Jackson College).
At Jackson and Tufts, she worked with and befriended Myra Herrick of Beverly, Massachusetts; she and Miss Herrick became lifelong friends, traveling extensively and sharing a love of gardening. For several years, Miss Bone was Director of Support Services at the Boston law firm Ropes & Gray. During that time, she was President of the International Association of Personnel Women, and served with distinction in that capacity. Following Ropes & Gray, she returned to higher education, holding administrative positions at Bradford College and Framingham State University.
In retirement, Miss Bone continued to travel, garden, and attend Boston Symphony, and was active on the Board of the Essex Condominium in Salem. As Miss Bone told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch over a half century ago, woman’s world was changing. She was a remarkable and successful agent in advancing that change.
