Obituary for Eugene J. Wood

Eugene J. Wood
BEVERLY FARMS - Eugene J. Wood, Sr., 86, husband of Mary H. (McCarrick) Wood, died peacefully Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, to the late James B. and Mary (Simonson) Wood. An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and later graduated from Northeastern University.

Mr. Wood worked for the New England Telephone Company for over 40 years, retiring as a marketing manager. He passionately volunteered for the Newton Special Olympics and the Boston Marathon for over 30 years. He was co-founder of the Beverly Farms youth hockey program, past Grand Knight of Beverly Farms Knights of Columbus, and past president of the Centerville Improvement Society; he also served on the board of the Beverly Cemetery Commission. An avid runner, he ran in the New York, Berlin, Dublin, and Montreal marathons. He was a self-taught musician and could play any instrument by ear. He loved to share a song or two with family and friends at any and all gatherings.

Above all else, Eugene loved his family. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Eugene J. Wood, Jr., and his wife Mary Jayne of Clarksville, TN; Donald F. Wood and his wife, Theresa, of Beverly; Mary Ellen Brown and her husband, Michael, of Merrimac; Maureen L. Clemens and her husband, Thomas, of Atkinson, NH; John P. Wood and his wife, Lisa, of Danvers; Ann Marie Gordon and her husband, Daniel, of Plymouth; Karen J. Gaffney and her husband, Hugh, of Beverly; Kevin T. Wood and his wife, Kelle, of Danvers; as well as daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Wood, of Groveland. He leaves grandchildren, Samantha, Patrick, Michaela and Liam Wood of Beverly; Lauren Shepard and her husband, Steve of Groveland; Ben Wood of Beverly; Keith Sherman and his wife, Liz, Megan Sherman and her fiancé, Israel and Michael Sherman of Merrimac; Stephanie Sherman of San Diego, CA; Brendan, David and Sean Clemens of Atkinson, NH; John Jr. and Erin Wood of Danvers; Daniel, Jessica and Allison Gordon of Plymouth; Hugh Jr., Owen, Maeve and Brynn Gaffney of Beverly; Kathryn and Kevin Wood of Danvers; and great-grandsons, Aiden Paul Vazquez of Merrimac and Peter James Sherman of Merrimac. Mr. Wood also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his loving sons, Peter J. Wood and Paul M. Wood, whom he will now be joining in God's loving arms.

Eugene Wood was one-in-a-million, a kind and loving man.
